Your radiators are vital when it comes to the delivery of heat to your property and poorly performing radiators can affect the overall efficiency of your system. Cold spots on radiators can be caused by a number of issues some of which can be found detailed below along with what action you should take to restore your radiator to its former glory.
The first thing you need to ascertain is, is your radiator hot at the top and cold at the bottom or is your radiator cold at the top and hot at the bottom.
If your radiator is cold at the top and hot at the bottom heres a handy tip!
In this scenario, it almost certainly means that you need to bleed your radiator. This is done by using a radiator bleed key, opening the vent at the top of the radiator and slowly allowing the air to pass through until it turns to water. It’s worth noting that should you have a sealed system, you may have to add a little water back into the system via the filling loop in order to replace the pressure you have just alleviated by removing the air.
If you are continuously having to bleed your radiators, it may mean that theres something a little more sinister occurring within your system. In this scenario, we would advise speaking to our team as it maybe caused by a chemical reaction within your system that’s creating a continuous source of air.
If your radiator is cold at the bottom and hot at the top heres what is likely to be the cause?
In this scenario, it’s likely the cause of this is due to sludge and dirt that has built up within the radiator over a period of time. Sludge and dirt collects in radiators due to its magnetic properties meaning stainless steel radiators are the perfect stomping ground for the sludge to collect. Gravity naturally pulls the dirt to the bottom of the radiator where it collects over time and because of its fabric, the heat your radiator emits suffers dramatically.
The most effective solution to this is a powerflush which is a procedure involving a machine, combined with powerflush magnets and cleaning chemicals. The combination of the three remove all the dirt and debris from your system, restoring your radiator and increasing the overall efficiency of your system.
